Teen Summer Reading Winners

August 5, 2010

For 2010 we had 31 teens signed up and participate in our Summer Reading Program. Our top Teen reader this year is Austin Kleen, a 10th grader at the Florence High School reading 360 books. Our runners up are Xochitl Licea reading 100 books, Sarah Combs reading 44 books, Anna Combs reading 35 books, Daniel Davidson reading 22 books, Shelbey Kleen reading 21 books and Paige DeLeon reading 14 books. The winners get their names put on a plaque in a book of their choice from the Library. Each has received numerous prizes from various businesses across Texas. Thank you to each of you that have read books or donated prizes this year for all the wonderful kids in Florence.

Contest

June 23, 2010

WANTED

Residents to enter a contest designing a flag for the city of Florence, Texas. No age restrictions, but must have a Florence address. The Florence Public Library will receive all entries. Entries will be in color and may be hand or computer sketched.

Name, telephone number and address will be required for each entry. Sketches will be no smaller than 9″ x 5″  or larger than 12″ x 8″.

Contest will run from 1 August thru 31 October 2010.

Winning entry will receive a $100 savings bond, a letter from the city and their picture in our local paper. The City Council will select the winning entry or oversee a selection board. There is no limit on the number of sketches that one person may submit.

Teen Summer Reading

It’s around the corner, summer!!! Time for our annual Summer Reading Program. This year we will be meeting at the Library June 2nd, June 9th, June 16th & June 23rd from 1:00-3:00. Our theme this year is transportation. So come on down and we’ll have fun reading and doing crafts. This years winners will receive your name in a book of your choice in the Library. Teen Summer Reading

It’s that time of year again. Summer is creeping around the corner. Just a few more weeks of school left and wondering what to do this summer. Come on by the Library. We have lots of great books to read. Join our Summer Readiong Program. Read a book and win a prize. Hope to see you all here.

If you really like books, we are looking for a couple great teens who would like to volunteer this summer. We need help running the front desk and reshelving books. Come by & grab an application.


Spring Lecture Series

The Eula Hunt Beck Florence Public Library is inviting everyone to attend our Spring Lecture Series starting February 9th at 6:30 p.m. The Lectures include:

February 9th   Bats in our Community    Glenna Teltow reveals the nighttime life of bats!

February 16th   Come listen to some toe-tappin’ Old Time Country Music    performed by Buddy Ferguson and Harold Harton  (Our community’s best polished musicians)

February 23rd     Wayne Rhoden, Past President of the Williamson County Master Gardeners will talk on Building a Raised Bed Garden, planning, building, selecting plants, irrigation, and maintenance.

March 2nd   Listen to the History of Country Music presented by the Country Combo,  musicians: Buddy Ferguson, Max Fry and Wayne Smith

Everyone is invited to attend this free series beginning at 6:30 p.m. Bring your family and friends and join us for four evenings of great stories, new insights, refreshments, and fun!


Holiday Closings

December 10, 2009

We will be closed from December 21st to January 3rd. We resume our normal business hours of 8:30-12:00 & 1:00-5:30 Monday thru Friday on January 4th. You can return books in our big blue book drop outside the Library at anytime, I plan on checking it several times during the Holiday Season. You can also leave a message on the phone (254-793-2672) and I’ll recheck your books that way. Plus there’s the internet, our email address is fllib@vvm.com you can email me what you would like done, re checking your books, book request or any questions for that matter.

It’s beginning to look and feel more like Christmas out there. The wind is cold and it may be raining, nothing on the television that interest you bet you could find a good book to read. Come on by! We have lots to choose from. Bolley, ” A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens,  “A Katie Kazoo Christmas” by Nancy E. Krulik, and lots more. 

We have a rather large selection of Christmas VHS like “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”, “A Christmas Tree”, “Snowden’s Christmas”, “Ernest Saves Christmas”, “Home Alone 2 Lost in New York”, and “Mickey’s Christmas Carol”. Browse our CD section, we have lots to offer in the way of Christmas Music. You never know what you can find. Just come on by!

The Library will be closed from December 21st to January 3rd. We will open up January 4th regular hours from 8:30-12:00 and 1:00-5:30.

Around the Corner

The weather is changing, the skies are getting darker, it’s getting colder. The seasons are changing, fall is on us. Leaves start turning bright colors of orange, red, yellow and brown. The yards are full of these leaves. It’s time to come in from the cold. Come by the Library and check out some of the cool books we have. Grab a good book and settle in a corner and go on an adventure. Or come by and surf the web. There are lots to do at the Library.
